Cat Dental

Just picked up Sydney from getting his teeth cleaned.  Dental care for felines is pretty annoying since he’s on an anti-crystal prescription diet and so can’t really eat dental treats.  I did buy a bag of dental food for $25 because it comes with a $50 rebate when your cat gets his teeth cleaned, though.  He had to get gas anesthesia cause I guess he wouldn’t exactly sit in a chair and obediently open his mouth to get cleaned.

Our Turf

Bunky and I jokingly refer to Sydney as our watchcat because he always alerts us when someone is at the door by growling (and then generally running away).  Tonight I was sitting at the computer when I heard some extended hissing and growling, and I knew someone must be at the apartment patio.  It’s unusual for Sydney to growl and hiss that much, so I wasn’t sure what to expect.

When I turned on the light, I was disappointed to see it was another cat.  Sydney has been in a condo for so long, that I haven’t seen him interact with other animals in years (plus those at the cottage tended to be much bigger, like deer and possums).  It was a grey and black striped cat that I’d seen around the apartment pool, and it gave Sydney the eye since Sydney couldn’t go outside for some wrasslin’.

Of course I’d always take Sydney’s side anyway, but I didn’t like the intruder cat for always strolling around the pool and taking drinks like a big cat on campus.  I immediately got out the squirt gun that I usually use for getting Sydney off of furniture and sprayed the intruder cat in the face.  Naturally the intruder cat ran off, and Sydney high-stepped around the house in victory.

I have no clue where Toby was during all this, but my guess would be that he was cowering under the couch.

Memorable Week So Far

This week just started and already it sucks:

  • Housing search continues to progress slowly.  Made final offer to seller of the house we wanted before, gave them 2 days to respond.
  • Checked out a fixer-upper house that is very cheap, but requires vast renovations.  Too bad that would require a lot of cash up front, unless we could somehow get additional financing (which apparently is harder to come by now).
  • Came back from seeing houses to find that hard drive had completely died.  Had not been backing up at night for the last few weeks because Bunky wanted to see if turning the computer off at night lowered the electricity bill.  Have to wait to see if I can recover any of the data from the dead hard drive (ordered a cheap SATA to USB adapter, since the other SATA clips are all broken from shoddy shipping).
  • Brother got in bad car accident, although he seems to be ok.  Car is in bad shape.
  • While on the phone talking about car accident, Sydney started puking.  Usually I toss him off the carpet towards the tile (I know, not ideal), but he was too far away from tile this time.  I made the mistake of trying to pick him up and carry him to the tiled area, which resulted in him spewing chunks of food in a wide fan pattern all over the carpet as Kiwi cried bloody murder.

How To Make Your Own Litter Box For Your Big Cat

Reminds me of Goldilocks and the Three Bears

Sydney is a big 19 lb cat, and for the last few years, I’ve been searching for a litter box that would fit him.  The biggest ones on the market were never long enough, and so he would go in and think his whole giant cat body was in the box… and then he would pee just outside the box right in front of the litter box.  The intent was there, but the execution was off.  Plus, Sydney likes to pee standing up, so he needs an enclosed box.  There was nothing big enough out there, and I knew that I needed a custom solution.  So ever since reading about making litter boxes, I dreamed of making my own.
